Perlite is a very useful Hydroponic media, being extraordinarily light with high water-retention properties. Perlite is less spongy and better drained than vermiculite. Perlite is made from salicaceous volcanic rock treated in a furnace at temperatures of 1400 degrees to form sponge like balls. Perlite is often used by itself or in a 70:30 mixture with vermiculite. Perlite can be neutral or slightly acidic. It has poor pH buffering capacity and no cation exchange capacity. As it is predominantly white, algal growth may easily occur in Perlite, while this does not harm the plants it can clog up pipes etc in a reticulating system or jam mechanisms such as a smart valve. Perlite is excellent for plant propagation purposes. Because it is light in weight it is highly suitable for suspended units such as strawberry racks and vertical tubs such as green genii tubes. Care should be taken when handling fresh dry perlite as its fine dust has high silica content which if inhaled is irritating. To avoid irritation, wet the perlite before use.Perlite absorbs 27% of its volume in water.
